Model 11 Info help

Post by famous58 »

Hello All.

I just received a model 11 from my Grand Father. It was my Great Grand Father's gun, but no one seems to know when it was made. It says model 11 but does not have a letter after it (does this mean it is an 11A?).

I read on Remington's site that the 12 gage serial numbers started at approx. 10,000. The serial on my gun is 17xxx, does that mean it is on of the first 7000 of this type of gun made? Is there a way to tell by the serial when a gun was made? Is there an online DB of this kind of stuff? I'm sure there is a book or something but I"m not a collector and am only interested in this piece.

If it is one of the early ones, does it make it worth any $$. The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of shooting it but I don't want to screw with it if it's worth any thing.

Which brings me to my next question, can I shoot regular rounds through it or does it require anything special?

Thanks in advance!

Called Remington and tehy told me it is one of the first ones made, 1906. Shot 75 rounds through it last night and it still shoots straight, amazing for a 100 year old gun.

FYI, if anyone else is trying to find the manufacture date just call 1-800-243-9700 and follow the prompts to product support & someone will help you right away (less than 1 minute for me).

Model 11

The company you called and talked to is at least three or four companies removed from when your gun was made. The John M. Browning designed squareback semi-auto was introduced in 1905 as the Remington Automatic Sold Breech Shotgun, by Remington Arms Co. From 1906 thru at least 1909 it was called the Remington Autoloading Gun, still by Remington Arms Co. In 1911 Marcellus Hartley Dodge combined his two companies as Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Company, and they began marking and marketting the guns as the Model 11. In 1920 the company became Remington Arms Co., Inc. In 1930 they began offering the Model 11 in 20-gauge (serial numbers beginning with 1,000,000) and in 1931 in 16-gauge (serial numbers beginning with 1,500,000). In 1934 DuPont took over controlling interest in Remington and one will begin finding DuPont logos on things. About 1985 DuPont called in all Remington stock and gave holders DuPont stock in exchange. DuPont unloaded Remington in 1993 or 4 and it became an independent company.

All the above as background to saying that if your gun says Model 11 it wasn't made until 1911 or later. There was for a couple of years a great Model 11 article in the history section of the Remington web site's magazine, but they have updated and it is gone. I printed it off once, but I can't seem to lay my hands on it.

model ID??

I have a model 11 number 468410. It does not say Model 11 anywhere, has the flaming bomb cartouche, duck and pheasant engraved scenes on the receiver, a mag extension, and a Cutts compensator made by Lyman on the barrel. Is this some sort of hybrid or is it a recognizable configuration? Thanks for any information.
