looking for info on rollin block rifle

My father in law was given a Remington rolling block rifle and I am trying to find out some info on it.

The last patend date on it is March 18 1874. It's chambered in .45-70. It's barrell length is 20" and the overall gun length is 36".

I am wanting to know an approximate production date and also what the gun was made for (military, hunting)
