I am new to Remington Rolling Blocks. Have been into Trapdoors for years and have suddenly branched off.
I have an 1871 Springfield Armory built number 1 and 43 spanish, also a number 1.
There appear to be no serial numbers on either of these arms. How do you know when they were built?
I'm guessing the 1871 SA rifle was build at earliest in 1871, but, more likely, some time later.
Any suggestion or help would be appreciated.
Thanks

David- Your Springfield Model 1871 rifle should be dated 1872 on the other side of the frame--the year it was made. To know what model the .43 caliber version is, more info is needed. If the part of the breech block that rotates under the barrel is concave in shape, then it was made up to 1870; If it is flat, then after 1870. Of the frame-to-stock joint is square/flat, then it was made up to about 1880. If the frame has a "rabbit" (or overlap) to keep the stock fitted snuggly, then it is post 1880. The exact patent markings on the tang are also a clue. The .43 caliber was made thru about 1900.
Re: Dating
Just got my hands on an 1879 Argentine Roller. To find the serial number you have to take off the butt stock. Serial numbers on mine are on the left side of the tang close to the receiver. Also, on the left rear of my barrel it's been stamped "11mm." I understand from some research I've done that the Argentine Arsenal rechambered some to 11mm Mauser about 1950 before re-importing them to the US from surplus.
