The 51 is the serial number. You have an early Gallery Special. The RW stands for Remington Works.

Pearsall, I'm shure you already know, but just in case you don't,there are two totally different retainers used on mod. 12's. Your may have the wrong one????

When you take the rifle apart, the inside of the back of the receiver should also have the 51 serial # stamped on the side. My two digit Gallery Special had the # stamped upside down.

Does it have or have the correct cartrdge stop installed? Can you break it down and show pictures of the inside parts?

I looked at my M-12 SN 86xxx and the carrier is some what different, but I'm sure it works the same. The dog engages the slot in the carrier during the ejection pump, then lifts it on the forward pump. I can't tell from the photo, but does the angle on the cartridge stop extend up into the magazine tube? It should.
By the way a serial number should be on the left side of the trigger group inside the
receiver. I'm not a gunsmith, so that's as much as I can offer.

The SN's on all that I've seen, are on the left side of the trigger group, when holding in firing position. The side plate is covered by the receiver when assembled. Of course I don't have one with that low a SN, maybe the early ones are different. That's all I the information can offer.
