What caliber is it?
How long is the barrel?
Its almost certainly .43 Spanish or .43 Egyptian but could be .42 Berdan - if so you probably won't be able to tell it from the .43 Spanish. Or, it could have been .43 Egyptian and later altered to one of the other .42/.43 cartridges.
It predates August of 1870 when the design of the breechblock changed and can't be one of the Egyptian pattern rifles that went to France because all of the 1st contract Egyptian rifles (with the concave breechblock) went to Egypt.... they were delivered 6 months before the Franco-Prussian War began. The story that they were diverted to France is a myth - although a later Egyptian order may have been.
The serial number on the butt as illustrated above is a very Spanish convention.
