Remington 14 1/2 44-40

Post by diyj98 »

A just saw a Remington 14 1/2 44-40, or so it's marked on the barrel. The receiver is marked "14". Were the receivers marked this way or has someone done some home gunsmithing? It had the "primerless" 44-40 caliber marker that wasn't flush with the receiver and the wheel rear sight.

That's about the right serial number range. I remember the "9" as the first number. The barrel was marked "44 REM or 44WCF". Out of habit I used 44-40 when I wrote the post. The stock has multiple cracks where it meets the receiver, but other than that it wasn't a bad looking rifle. The bluing was well worn to a patina, but the bore was nice.

Ken,

He wants to sell it, but it's a "make me an offer". I know he's showing the rifle around trying to get the highest offer. The stock having those multiple cracks are the only thing scaring me off. I'm not sure how bad the cracks hurts the value.
