Model 12A remington 22 cal

I recently picked up a model 12A, the rifle is very clean. The issue i am having is with the ammo. I am fairly new to the older remington small rifles. I purchased some 22 cal rimfire ammo for the gun, but the barrel is smaller diameter than the ammo. Is there a specific ammo type for this rifle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of ammo did you buy? If your rifle (12-A) is stamped on the side of the barrel 22 short long or long rifle all you need are standard velocity 22 short, long, or long rifle ammo. The shorts and long rifles will be your most common. If your rifle only says 22 shorts then you can only shoot shorts. If it says 22 long rifle then you van only shoot 22 long rifles. If your 12 is an A model it will have a round barrel.

the barrell says short, long, and long rifle. I purchased 22 long rimfires, and they are too large to fit in barrell. I am guessing i need standard rounds and not the rimfire rounds..

Your rifle would be Rimfire. You said you bought longs or long rifles? If your rifle has not been modified in any way you can just buy any standard velocity .22 Rimfire ammo. Are yoU loading threw the magazine tube?

If you are just trying to see if the bullet will fit down the bore...It shouldn't... It should be just a bit smaller so it will conform to the bore when fired. The most available ammo will be 22 Long Rifle, Standard Velocity. It's the same size as the more common Hi Velocity but the Standard Velocity can be fired safely in a M/12 in good condition.
