Remington Rolling Block

Post by chuck zimmerman »

I received a Remington Rolling Block rifle forty + years ago when the gunsmith I worked for retired. The barrel is 33 1/2 inches long, 11 1/2 inches is octagon the remaining is round. The top is stamped E. Remington & Sons Ilion. N.Y. It is stamped 44S 1 1/2" in front of the forearm on the bottom of the barrel. The serial #1997 is stamped behind the trigger guard, in front of the screw holding the receiver to the stock. All the metal is pristine and a different stock has been added. It has a tip up rear sight and thefront sight has a bubble level. The numbers on the front sight match. Can anyone help me to identfy this Remington? A couple more details, the rifle weights 10lbs and there is the following dates on the receiver, May 3rd 1864,May7,June11,Nov12,Dec24,Dec31,1871,Sept 9 1873. If it can be identified, I would consider selling it.

It may me a Model 5, 1897, Mexican 7MM. They all had four digit numbers stamped on the trigger guard. From what I have learned, these were the only EB's with any type of serial number. The octogan barrel is not original to the 1897's or any of the 7MM Model 5's.

There is a matching serial #4697 under the forearm, also has II Hepburn mark. No serial #on rear sight. The photos I have take up to much memory to sent.

Maybe email?

Your description sounds like it might be a long range rifle. You have given two different serial numbers. Is one in error or is it a parts gun? The first number is too low to be a long range. The barrel number is in the correct range. L.L. Hepburn was a company employ who worked on the target rifles and also shot them. Ed
