Need grade of Remington Model 11

Post by Rusty118 »

I have acquired a Remington Model 11, 20 gauge. I believe the mfg date, by the barrel code, is Feb 1938. The question is, how can I tell if it is an "11B" or higher grade. The "Standard Catalog of Remington Firearms", only shows a field grade gun, but lists 11B, 11D Tournament, 11E Expert and the Premier grade. The 11B and 11E only indicate they are engraved but does not give any explanation of the engraving. The one I have has a scene of a Mallard rising from a marsh on the left side and a Pheasant walking through a grass field on the right side. All of the engraving and the lettering on top of the barrel is gold inlayed. The serial number, if it helps, is 10451xx. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can take pictures, but I don't know how to post them. I can send them via email.
Thanks
Joe
P.S. This is my first attempt at posting. I don't know what all the symbols are, so if something is wrong, I appolpgize.

The Model 11D, E or F were handengraved guns. Right around the 1938 time frame Remington began putting a roll-stamping on the sides of the Model 11 receivers, the the same as on the three-shot version "The Sportsman." So, by that time, the only difference between a Model 11A "Standard" Grade and a Model 11B "Special" Grade was the quality of wood. From the 1938 Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalogue --

In the early days the Model No. 11A "Standard" Grade wasn't checkered but by the 1920s, or maybe earlier, it got checkering. From the Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co. catalogue of 1913-14 --

P.S. I seriously doubt your Model 11 left Ilion with any gold on it. Sounds like the work of one of those Herters gold wash kits that were popular in the 1950s and 60s.

Thank you Researcher: If you look closely at the picture you posted of the 11B "Special" grade, it has the Pheasant running through grass and appears to be gold inlayed. I don't believe it would show up as good in the picture if it were not. I have seen the gold wash kit jobs and they do not look this good. Anyway, thanks again
