Can any one tell me what model this rifle is?

Post by rode_owen22 »

Im sure anyone that knows a little about guns could probably tell me this in a sec. But I dont have a clue lol. I cant find a serial # or model on this gun. Im gonna try to explain what it does have stamped on the barrel, the best I can. I tried to take pictures of the marking but they wouldn't show up on camera. So here goes nothing.

In the following order going down the barrel:

Flaig's
280 Rem.

309

An "A" turned sideways with what looks to be a star on top.

A picture of a stick dragon? follow directly by a "|", a upside down "J" and a sideways "V" Both
of them are side by side. Followed directly by what looks to be a arrow.

Here is gun pics of the gun.

Thanks for the reply. So the Falig's thing makes sense. Maybe they made a mistake stamping the name on this gun, because I just double checked and it for sure says Flaig's. It does have a stamp (on top of the action) that has a "F" and "N" put on top of each other then the word "Action" right behind it, then directly behind that, it says "Made in Belgium ".

This is a noob question, but to make sure I am following so far. The .280 caliber is just a Remington caliber and the gun itself is not a Remington firearm. It is actually a gun made by a company called Falig's, in Pa.

Again thanks for the response and I'll try to get those pics( if i can get the stamping to show up in the picture) up asap.

Yep. 280 barreled Belgian Mauser. That action was used under several brand names.

So is the brand of this gun a Flaig's gun or did this gun start out as something else and Flaig's just customized or modified another brand and then Flaigs put their name on it?

Here's the best posts I found:

When I asked Charley Flaig what barrels he used for sporters he made, he answered that he used Douglas barrels. That was in the late 1960's

Flaigs was located in Millvale, PA, near Pittsburgh, and I believe they operated from shortly after WW2 until maybe the 1980s. Their market niche was the conversion of military surplus rifles (or souvenirs brought home by returning GI's) into good quality sporting rifles. They also sold barrel and stocks and other items for other gunsmiths and hobbyists to use. I think they also did general gunsmithing type work, and were fairly highly regarded among shooters. For decades nearly every issue of the American Rifleman had a Flaigs ad in there somewhere.

Flaig's was located near Millvale, PA, a suburb on the near North side of Pittsburgh, not Philadelphia. They were located on a rather large preserve of woods, had a big lodge and several outbuildings where many gunsmiths worked. They did a lot of conversions and custom builds of surplus rifles, '03's and 98 Mausers, after WWII. The workmanship was typically very good to outstanding. They had a very good reputation. You could get anything from a simple re-barrel to a full up engraved custom. I managed to visit their shop twice when I lived in the Pittsburgh area. I don't recall when they actually closed, but it was probably the late '70's or early 80's at the latest.
