760 Chambered in .300 Savage

Post by mattexass »

I have a 760 Chambered in .300 Savage serial pretext of YY which is 1952 I believe. Anyway, 300 Savage in my area is few and far between. Is there anyway to change from .300 Savage to .308 win? I know that .300 sav. was the parent case of the .308 so they should be similar. Is is as simple as a barrel swap?

I realize that there are some sources that say that, but from my readings, I'd be more inclined to use the term "was the inspiration for" with regard to how the .308 Win came to be. To me, there are just too many dimensional differences between the two (with the Savage cartridge being the shorter of the two) to use the word "parent".

Anyway, if it were me, I'd take up reloading......as I presume you do not.......OR.......get a different rifle.

Getting a different barrel (in .308 Win) to fit your early 760 is going to be a near impossibility.
Having it rechambered for the .308 Win. is a possibility, but then you're going to seriously decrease the value of that 760 (especially if it's in good condition)......and having it rechambered may be expensive, too.

Here are some links to some reading material.

I could be wrong, but I believe you will need a vintage barrel. Find another 300 barrel and rechamber that one so you can still have an intact rifle if you choose. Why do you not like the 300? It is a fine cartridge that has brought down a lot of game in its 90 odd years of life. Shoots almost as good as the 308 and has somewhat less kick to it.

You could spend that $120+ for the barrel and then you'll have to find out whether it does or doesn't fit......and you're going to have to pay a gunsmith to try to install it (check the headspacing, etc.). By the time you're done, you'll have two or three hundred dollars into it and still have to buy ammunition. What is it now......about $20 - $30 per box of 20?

Here are some rough figures for getting set up to reload. As long as you save the brass and reuse it, it'll last for quite a few reloadings. If you shop "smart" and look around, you can probably find this stuff cheaper, but I was using "ballpark" figures.

How much are you going to shoot that thing? What are you going to shoot with it?
Ballistics-wise, the .300 Savage is nearly identical to the .308 Winchester. You're really not gaining anything.

If you know where to look, you can also find .300 Savage loaded ammunition......and for about the same cost as the .308 Win. loaded ammo.
