Model 12a

Post by ebelmike »

I recently bought a Remington Model 12a rifle. I was hoping some one could help with the production date. The serial number is 4801XX I think it is pre 1921 since it does not have the 1921 and later letter designation for year and month. The other question I have is looking at some of the online parts blow ups they show the original rear sight is an adjustable elevation screw. The rifle I have has the rear sight with the ramp elevator was this stock on some of the models or did someone switch it. Other wise it is a great looking little rifle I am planning to give it to my son for his birthday and I think he will love it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Your 12-A was made in 1919. A step adjustable rear sight was used from 1915 to 1923. Yours should have an elevator that wraps partially around the barrel.

Thanks for the information John.

I don't know what type of elevator it had it was missing so I ordered a replacement from Numrich pn#395060O. It looks like what is on there now and the only grooving I see on the barrel is in line with the slot on the sight for the ramp. Also on the year of the rifle do they also break down by month at all.

Thanks again,

The records do not break down by month, but 1919 production started at #435,287 and ended up at #487,227. If Rem made the same # every day your rifle's birth date would be May 22.

Thanks again John,

I got the sight elevator in and gave the gun a good cleaning. Now I just have to wait until August 17th to give it to my son.
Thanks,
Mike E.
