Tumbling Brass

Post by CWarmouth »

Is there any reason why it would be a bad idea to put loaded ammo in a tumbler with corncob media?

A lot of experts warn against polishing loaded ammo mainly because of the possibility of altering the size of the granules and the factory "deterent" that some powder that is coated with which plays a part in the burning rate which could come from vigirous motion. Personally I have tumbled it before, but no more that I just had to.

It's something I would never consider doing. (for the reason mentioned)

I've been loading ammo for over 45 years and I've heard all the horror stories, and I wouldn't recommend doing this. Clean the ammo with some scotchbrite or similar if it's really grungy, then shoot it up and tumble the cases afterwards. Do not use Brasso, etc. or any other liquid brass cleaner. If you do happen to shatter the grains of powder you could be in real trouble, to the point of blowing up a perfectly good rifle. Why risk it?
