Anyone got a pic of a #5 Sporter they can post. Buddy found one in 30-40 that has an ebony foreend tip....factory originals appear to have schnabnels. I just thought #1 Sporters were rare!

Turned out to be the real deal & in 30-40! No finish left but it's tight according to guy that owns it and shoots very well even with a dark bore. Wish I had a pic from him to post.

Does Marcots book mention about how many #5 sporters were made? Anyone?

The #5 Sporter was made from 1898 - 1904 with a production of only 198.
I believe all the serial numbers started with 5-xxx.

Am curious whether your info came from Marcot's book or not. Reason I ask is that Scheirs book on Rolling Blocks says a fair number were made and that production ceased in 1910. However, I've found his book has about as many errors as Cartridges of the World.

Yes, the information came from "Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines, & Shotguns"
Sporting & Target Rifles by Roy Marcot & Jay Lewis.

Thanks again!!! Very much!!! Well, it looks like the bore on this rifle of my friends is too far gone from neglect and he's a shooter/collector....not a collector. But he also will not re-barrel the rifle because of its rarity.
