141 question
141 question
I just bought a remington 141 in 35 rem ....i got it home and noticed that the action bar cover slides back and forth...after checking out the diagram on the model 14 disassembly i see it looks like it is attatched to the recvr with a screw...looks like my screw tab has broken off of the cover plate...is this an easy fix?? please tell me it is...this rifle is to replace a family heirloom that was just stolen and i have big plans for this rifle...if this can be fixed the rest of the rifle is in great shape!
Re: 141 question
A friend had the same thing happen to his. He got a replacement cover from Wiseners. He said it was a pain to get fitted correctly.
Re: 141 question
anyone know where i might find one? e-gunparts and wisners both seem to be out of them

Re: 141 question
I checked. Actually he got it from Nambujim on GunBroker (not Wiseners as I incorrectly recalled). Nambujim is one of the guys on this forum. You might try to PM him.
If it was mine, I would weld repair it. If Nambujim doesnt have another, you might ask your gunsmith how he feels about welding it. Not everyone is comfortable welding small parts.

Re: 141 question
Numrich Arms has the parts that you are looking for. Both the cover and the screw.
You can find them online.

Re: 141 question
Guys!
Yes, Numrich put the "action bar cover" back on their listing today and that is the good news. Action Bar Covers come in at least seven (7) different designs and the one they offer with the indentation in it is for mid-late Model 14's. The correct one for the M141 is smooth except for about a 1/8" slight grove running the length of the cover.
I am not saying the Numrich cover will not work, I am saying that there is great variation in all the designs. A chap was selling 141
covers on Gunbroker until about 10 days ago that were proper for the gun and were "new old stock".
Welding is not my choice of repair for these but if that is the only choice then there is a little trick you can use to "hopefully" make it fit (this would also apply to the current Numrich cover) and that is after the weld is complete, open up the screw hole for a bit more latitude in seating the cover properly.
If you install a new replacement or a welded one you will know quickly if you have a proper fit! If it binds when the action bar cover screw in tight, then you have a problem!!! You can test it in stages by backing off the screw and let the cover float in place. If that seems to work, get the drill out and slowly and gently open up the hole in the flange.
Parts on the M141 are quite consistent and will usually interchange, that is NOT so with the M14 where they usually will not interchange. I put together a "commentary" on this subject and have submitted it for publication. The point I am making is that if you have an M14, your chances of getting a replacement part that is an "exact" fit is about 50/50. Using mid production M14 parts on a M141 is also a "crap shoot".

Re: 141 question
well thats a little disappointing
i really want to make this rifle work....it's not drilled and tapped, in great shape, and within 9 months of my grandfathers which was stolen

Re: 141 question
Hey!
The "impossible" just takes a little bit longer, you will get it in full operating condition but maybe not immediately. If you were local I would tell you to run it by and we could have it working
in no time at all...............well, maybe but the chances are pretty good.
Funny thing, last week a chap from about 30 miles away has a 141 with the identical problem. He is coming down tomorrow to have me fit an A/B cover that I just got off a 141 clunker that I purchased for parts. Timing and location is everything, you can try the cover from Numrich and if it doesn't fit they readily take returns with you paying the return postage.
If all else fails you can send it to me and I'll try my best to remedy the situation..................did you say the screw was in place or broken off??

Re: 141 question
screw is still in place...tab just broke off....my gunsmith is going to try and re-attatch the tab...i will be patient and see what he comes up with...thanks for the help and I will definately keep you in mind. I know this isn;t grandpas rifle but it's close and is meaning more to me the further i get with it....once i get it all operational, it will be high polish blued, and high gloss wood, and then the stock laser engraved with grandpas picture and name
