Dear Mike,

Finding a No.3 Hepburn Military Target Rifle chambered for .44-85 does not surprise me. E. Remington & Sons made so very few of these rifles that I'm sure they would chamber one exactly to the customer's specifications.

Factory production records no longer exist, so we cannot go to official factory records to verify this.

All in all, you have a very rare rifle.
