Post by zacharoo »

I am new to this forum so I don't know if this correst. I have a Remington model 14 in 30 rem. Has any of you reloaded for the 30 remington with 125 gr. Siera bullet or the 130 gr. speer hot core flat point. I have IMR 3031 and IMR 4895 powders. I also use cci and remington large rifle primers. Any data will be appreciated.

33.5gr of 3031 for 2500fps is a good load for the 125gr Sierra FN.

33gr of 3031 for 2500fps is a good load for the 130gr Speer FP.

Both of these loads are near 100% load density and run at the same approximate pressure as the standard 30gr 3031/150gr bullet load. They yield optimal bullet times in a 22 inch barrel.

3031 is a bit temperature sensitive, so back off 0.5 to 1 gr if you are shooting in summer, or with a warm barrel. Add 0.5 to 1 gr for winter hunting use.

In my experience, the 14/141 are throated for and work best with round nose bullets. So the bullets you asked about aren't going to be the best, but they will work.

My personal favorites are 30gr 3031 with a 150gr RN bullet and 25gr of 4198 with a 110gr Remington RN 30 carbine bullet. Both will run 2250fps and shoot to the same point, so you don't need to rezero if you switch ammo. The 110 gr load is very mild at the shoulder, but explosive at the target. It will cut a rabbit in two and splatter blood and guts four feet in every direction.

Extra notes: The Rem 30 wasn't designed to be hot rodded. It will let know if pressures are getting too high. If you start to feel slightly sticky extraction, back off a bit. The weak link is the case, which isn't very strong. Sticky extraction means the cases are stretching and binding the bolt. It also means that the cases arent going to last for many reloadings before you start getting case/head separations. Keep going up and extraction will get very difficult and primer pockets will start getting loose. Keep going and the barrel will fail. Notice that the diameter of a 14/141 barrel is a lot smaller than a Rem 700, for example. The action itself is far stronger than the barrel or the case. Also, depending on which dies you use, I think you will find that if you full length resize, it will push the shoulder back way too much which will create excess headspace and excess case stretch (20 thous or so). I have found this to be true in all my 30 Rems and 25 Rems. A good way to check is to shoot a mild load and check to see how much the primer backs out. OBTW, a backed out primer will also cause the action to bind slightly, giving sticky extraction and mimicking excess pressure.

4895 is too slow.
