Remington model 12 feeding problem
Remington model 12 feeding problem
Hi, I am new to this site. I have recently acquired a Remington Model 12C and am having trouble with feeding rounds into the chamber. The action does not seem to go back far enough. When I pump the action back, the breech bolt is almost 3/8ths of an inch short from reaching the back, resulting in poor ejection and the inablility to feed rounds from the tube into the chamber. This rifle is in the 495,000 serial number range, and all of the parts seem to be complete and consistent with a rifle of this s/n range. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong here? I love this rifle and am currently using it as a single action rifle, but I would love to be able to fill up the feeding tube and use it as it was designed. Thanks for any help you can provide !!

I have a feeling it was assembled wrong. Take it apart completely and reassemble according to instructions.. Let me know. Jay Huber
Re: Remington model 12 feeding problem
I have tried to be careful assembling it but could very well have done it wrong since this is my first experience with a pump gun. I will go over the assembly instructions again just to be sure. As it is now, the breech bolt stops because the edge hits the hammer halfway up, and it looks like the hammer either isn't laying far enough down, or the breech bolt does not rise far enough up to clear it so that hammer can slide under it as it should. I will try a careful reassembly as you suggest, and let you know how it goes. thanks.

Re: Remington model 12 feeding problem
It is not an assembly problem. It definitely looks like the block does not ride over the hammer all the way back as it should when pumping it back. If I shaved a little from the bottom of the block, then I think that would allow it to go back further. It looks like it would be safer to grind a little off the bottom of the block than it would be to grind the hammer. since that would affect how it would strike the firing pin. I can't see any safety issues here, only the possiblity that if I did it wrong, that I would then need to start looking for an almost impossible to find replacement part.

Re: Remington model 12 feeding problem
I'm on the road right now, so I dont have one of mine to look at, but it sounds to me like the hammer spring assembly (or whatever it is called) could be binding and preventing the hammer from fully cocking.
Re: Remington model 12 feeding problem
Wow, that is an area of the gun I haven't even looked at or considered. I will now. Thanks.
