Post by dastrom1 »

My father gave me his model 12 .22 from when he was a kid, and there are two threaded holes on the bottom of the barrel one 3 inches from the barrel end the other 5 3/4 inches does anybody know what they are for. There is also a long set of hash marks on the bottom of the barrel just in from of the magazine tube that i dont know what they are?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that the threaded holes may have been to mount a light of some kind for night hunting (spotlighting).

Don't know about the "hash marks". Does it look like they were original......like from the factory or cut in with a marking tool.....or a hacksaw blade? Any "marks" from the factory would have been "punched" into the metal before it was blued.....and then would only be like letters or inspection marks.......as are shown in this link (barrel code location diagram):

Thanks for the reply the hash marks look to be factory installed. Its stapped as a model 4-s with a serial number of 310892 with rw right above the serial number on the bottom side of the reciever. I'll try to take some good pictures of the hash marks and the threaded holes. But i am new to posting on a forum thanks again

The "R W" in the bottom of the receiver stands for "Remington Works". If you go up to the Search line and put in "Remington Works", you'll find some references to it from previous inquiries.

Welcome to the forum.

I am begining to believe that I have a model 4s barrel on a model 12 reciever and the holes are the bayonet mounts.

Thank You, David

Well, the Model 4 was a rolling block .22.

I doubt that it would have a bayonet mount (or any reason to "need" one).

dastrom,
I tend to agree with you. I have an American Boy Scout M-4 Rolling Block.
The barrel is 28" long with the bayonet stud 3 1/8" from the end of the barrel, and the
forearm- sling swivel stud is 5 7/8". There is also another hole 13 5/8" back on the
under side. I don't know why. However, I have no idea what the hash marks are.
The barrel would have to been dovetailed for the magazine support. That might explain the hash marks.
The Remington trade mark on the #4 is located 11 1/4" back from the muzzle. It also has a patent date of July 22 1902.
That's the best I have to offer,

Thank You ChuckD what you discribed is exactly what i got with the barrel right down to the patient date. The hash marks are two sets of 65 marks evenly spaced running side by side about 8 1/4 inches from the muzzle on the bottom side of the barrel. With about 1.5 millimeter spacing. There dirrectly below the "Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co." thats in front of the remington trade mark. I didn't even notice the hole 13 5/8 back till now, and yes the barrel was dove tailed for the magazine support. Do you have any info on the bayonet. Thanks David L
