I've always had a passion for antique and C&R American firearms. However, I'm a rookie at collecting, buying, selling and trading antique firearms and I think I just suffered a significant battle scar(DAMNIT). This was my virgin voyage into antique Rem. and 'online' buying.
I recently bought a Rem. U.S. Navy M1867 Rolling Block Carbine
.50-45 23 1/4 in. bbl w/ anchor stamp. The bore is very shiney w/ good rifling. It has three(3) sling loops, foreend, buttstock and in the front of the trigger guard. An upper tang peep sight was added on kinda sloppily with boogered screw heads, has the front bead sight but the rear sight was removed.
I would like to buy a rear sight that's old but functional w/ screws if possible.
I would appreciate some constructive feedback (quit buying online perhaps?).
I paid $1,175 for the carbine. I went to a gun shoe in Ft. Wth. TX Sat. Aug. 29 and couldn't even get a good look at it without the rear sight.
Thanks

Smokey,
Since no one else has responded, I'll take a crack at it. I'm going to "take you out behind the woodshed", as an example to others, but NO PERSONAL ANIMOSITY is intended.
The assumption in your first paragraph is - sadly - correct. IMHO, you took a real bath. I do NOT understand how a person having "passion" (which implies making/taking the time to do some research) would get so badly stung.
ANY kind of modification ("added tang sight") to virtually any military model pretty well KILLS the appeal, and the value. To have it be done poorly ("boogered screws") just compounds the issue. The good news is that I suspect that some good-hearted Remington guy here probably has the proper sight and screws. I do not, being a collector of Springfields. As to the "bead" front sight, I do not believe that is correct either - AFAIK, the original was a narrow blade, sloped on both sides
There is NOTHING wrong with buying on line, per se, BUT, you need to know WHAT you are buying - that is where the research part comes in. That model can easily be had, in more original condition, for less money. At any given time there are usually 2-3 on GunBroker.com
I have NO idea what you meant by "and couldn't even get a good look at it without the rear sight." Did you buy the carbine on line or at a show? Online purchases almost always come with a three-day return privilege; did you try to send it back? If not, why not? If you bought at a show, there is no return, as you presumably (there's that damn "research" angle again) knew what you were looking at.
DON'T give up, just be patient, and, do your homework next time!

Thanks Hosmer. I'll take the loss along with a good lesson. I wasn't on the market for a Rem. when I was presented with this 'Deal'. I bought a Win. '73 and Colt SAA from a guy and he said 'I've got this Rem. and such a deal I'll make you etc. ...'. So, I never saw it prior to receiving it. I took it to the show last weekend and couldn't come close to breaking even when I tried to sell it. So I'll keep it, put the rear sight on it and shoot it.
It's really a clean gun outside of the boogered screw head and no rear sight.
Thanks again.
Smokey

Matt,
I can't post photos right now, no digital camera. I guess I should get one and join the 21st century.
My Colt SAA .44-40 4 3/4 in. bbl has a DOM 1906. Shoots good. I'm looking for a 1st gen.
