GunBroker auction number 136486772 - what is it?

Post by Dick Hosmer »

Any idea what this is? For some reason it has intrigued me through several iterations on GB, even though there is not much left.

First off, despite the seller's claim, I'm not sure of caliber. Cannot tell if it is rf or cf, but the barrel at muzzle sure looks like .58 to me. Even if really is .50-70, it cannot be any of the SA variations, and hammer is not the NYS type, etc., and so forth.

Thanks.

My guess, based on the photo of the right side of the receiver, is that it started life as a Mexican model (Republica Mexicana (R M) with the liberty cap/sunburst above). That dealer makes all kinds of outrageous claims. If I remember correctly, Mexico bought both .50-70 and .43 Spanish in rifles and their carbines were produced with both center fire/ rimfire breech blocks for .50-70 and .56-50 RF.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I know what you mean - he is not one of my favorites, either!

My long-standing procedure on GB, and other such, is to look at the pictures first. IF I see something interesting, then, and only then, will I read the sales pitch.

Hello Guys,

Mexico also bought some rifles in .58 centerfire. I have 2 transformed rifles in my collection, with Mexican markings on them. One was made from the Model 1861 Sringfield Musket and the second one is made from the Model 1863 Musket.

Have a good day,
