Rolling Block Musketoon

Post by Flatlander »

I am also new to this forum but have been a roller collector/user for a long time. Recently I came across a well used Remington Roller Musketoon (2-band with bayonet lug and 24" barrel.) As I have not seen anything like this before I thought I would ask a few questions. The chamber cast comes out approx as an 11.43X55R Egyptian with the 2.30" long case (.620" rim, .570" body dia. and .443" bore) as opposed to the 1.94" long case of the 11.43X50 Remington Egyptian. I have read that Remington produced "very few" musketoons and that most were made for samples. What is it I have? Ideas?

Thanks;

Remington did make a small quantity of 2-band musketoons. I have two of them in my collection. One is in 43 Egyptian and the other one is in 50-70. Heard they also made some in 43 Spanish. These are a very hard rolling block to come by, only seen 2 other ones in 20 years of collecting rolling blocks.

The musketoon in the back row is the Egyptian Model and the one in front of it is chambered in 50-70.
With a case length of 2.30" it could be chambered in 11.43x55R Turkish.
Hope that helps you out some.

Have a good day,

Matt:

Thanks for the reply. I am now convinced I should leave her as she is. I origionally bought it for an action to rebuild. I guess my plans have changed thanks to you.

I noticed in your photo that your two have the under-slot cut for the ram rod but no rod is in either of them. Are those hard to come by as well or were they just elsewhere when you took the photo?

Hello Flatlander,

The cleaning rods for my two musketoons are missing. For some reason the clearing rods for rolling block rifles are now hard to come by. When I stared collecting them, you use to see them for sell at guns shows, now that is not the case. When you do fine them the dealers are asking top dollar for them. You have a nice rifle, good luck on the search for another action.
