Choke on Sportsman 12 Magnum pump with rifle sites.

Post by JDNC »

I have a Sportsman 12 Magnum pump. It has rifle sights on it. They look factory, but it could be an aftermarket. It is a Remington barrel and its 19 inches from the front of the receiver. Any idea of the choke that barrel might have? I'd like to shoot it at skeet/trap/5 stand and want to know what it would be best at.

I believe that barrel has no choke, having been designed for rifled slug shooting. I believe that was before the era of sabot slugs and rifled barrels, but I would definitely look and make sure it is a smoothbore before trying to shoot any shot.
A cylinder bore is not that bad for shooting skeet, which is a close range game, with 1-1/8 ounce loads, but I believe you will find yourself severely handicapped trying to shoot anything else with no choke, and those rifle sights won'y help much either. Best bet is probably another barrel.

The barrel has no rifling. Smooth as silk. Does that mean the choke is probably tight/full or would it be more like a skeet choke?

For a real quick answer as to whether the gun is a full choke, insert a fresh dime into the muzzle. If it will not go in, it is full choke. if it does enter, the gun is more open choked.

How did you extrapolate no rifling to mean a tight choke? Wrong. A Remington barrel it will say what the choke is right on it. If it doesn't say anything, it has no choke, or it is a RemChoke barrel with screw in choke tubes, and those say what they are right on them, too.

Every Remington catalog I've looked through that lists a factory made, rifle-sighted, smooth-bore (no choke tubes), 12 ga., "Deer barrel", as you seem to be describing......shows the choke as being "Improved Cylinder".
