I had always thought the Krag was the first U.S. issued repeating bolt action rifle.

Re: Rifle identification
Are you sure it's nickel plated and not just polished steel?

Re: serial number locations
Thanks, Daniel.
It doesn't seem to me that hand fitting could accomplish a lot - once those ratchet angles are machined into it, grinding or something on them would only make it worse. Maybe just smoothing some burrs or enlarging some of the slots that the bolt drops into - but then the cylinder ...

serial number locations
On another site they talked about having a serial number on the back of the cylinder on a new model army. I thought they were only on the bottom of the barrel, on the left grip frame, and on the trigger guard tab. Were they also on the cylinder? It seems like there wouldn't be any room for it on the ...

Thanks for writing that. I'm 78 and can relate at least to the time period you grew up in. It's sad but necessary to "move on" with our lives . I really liked the part about the heavy paper work - that sounds right to me!

"Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861 - 1888" by Donald L. Ware
My copy says 2007 by the University of New Mexico Press
A really good book for anyone who likes these revolvers.

Those could be marks from a very aggressive wire wheel.

Re: Remington New Model Army 44
In the book "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers" by Donald l. Ware, it says:
#76173 was made in June of 1864
#86570 July 1864
#95597 August 1864
This is a worthwhile book to get if you can find it.
I don't know if it's possible to find out where they were used - other people on this site know a lot ...

Re: NMA questions
It would be interesting to see the cylinder pin and loading lever out of the gun, it would seem as though the pin can't be full diameter the entire length without interfering with the lever. There were earlier versions of this system though.

Well I guess the xp-100 must be the black sheep of the Remington family. I know the 221 fireball ammo is not exactly a common item on the shelf at Fleet Farm!

Re: Looking for Help: 1858 New Model Police .36 4.5"
It would be good to post this in the ""pre 1899 handgun" section.
The loading lever catch is probably the same as on other new model single actions, so it would be available. I wouldn't think there is a side plate to remove. On a single action revolver all the parts come out through the openings by ...

Re: remington ??
Wow, I wouldn't have known that! Were those companies licensed in some way by Remington or just copying because they could get away with it?
Were Remington guns well known enough in Europe to make it worthwhile to copy the name? It seems like they could (should) have put their own name on it.

Re: remington ??
It is a Remington double derringer 41 caliber rimfire. According to a book I have they were made from 1866 to 1935. It was nickel plated originally - some of that has worn off on yours. A lot of people like them and collect them. Take good care of it and treat it gently!
