ShooterMark wrote:Greetings. I spend most of my time on the 1911 forum, MichiganGun Owners, or BrianEnos forum... but I'm new to this group.

I have two inherited guns that I'm trying to "date". I researched the barrel stamps and am stumped on a model 700.... and on a 1100.

The BDL is a 7 mag Serial B6205xxx. The gun is mint and I know that there were never any barrel replacements or other surgery preformed but the barrel stamp is PA 27, which as I read the chart would mean June of 1932????

The model 1100 is a field grade vent rib 12 gauge with a serial number of 440xxx and the barrel stamp is WP 7... which dates it to August 1923???

What am I doing wrong???

Thanks in advance for your help.
You're not taking into consideration that they reuse the letters for different dates.

"P A" on the Mdl. 700 translates to June of 1980 (The preceding letter "B" of the serial number also puts it in the early '80s.)

The "W P" on the 1100 MAY translate to August of 1967.
If there were no preceding letters to the serial number, that date would be correct.

The following has been posted numerous times in these pages.

And remember, the 1100's barrel could be a replacement, so serial number is the only way to date the removable barrel shotguns for sure.

It's really hard to give values on guns that you can't physically see and hold. Is the engraving factory? Was the rifle reblued? Is it a factory stock? Why was the stock changed? Has it been altered in other ways? Condition?? Personally what you describe I would walk away from that rifle unless it next to free. There are plenty of other used Remington rifles that are not modified in any way for reasonable prices. I'm glad to hear your sharing the time with your son, and I would hate to see a rifle ruin any great moments you could have together. I would recommend a nice conditioned Remington 700 in the 7mm rem mag. It wont beat up you or your son near as much and still do a great job. Ammo is also quite popular as well.
