I'm not sure what to tell you. The letters "K I" would be May of 1976 (pre-1980), but then there should be a prefix letter of "M" in the serial number. The letter "K" could be for the year 1963 and wouldn't have a serial number prefix, but that sounds a little suspicious, too.

Here's another list with some of the letter codes for the serial numbers.
If you can't figure it out, maybe some of the 1100 gurus might chime in with some thoughts. Or, maybe you could post some pictures.

Date Remington 1100
Re: Date Remington 1100
Where do you live that you have to register a shotgun to take it to a gunsmith?
That is a 1963 Model 1100. Very cool. Serial number puts it about 3,000 before mine, which I bought new. It probably has the original metal 'V' ring gas seal instead of the later 'O' ring. Keep an eye on the forearm support as the spot weld tended to crack on the first incarnation; that may be the piece you have problems with now. I would replace the 'V' ring with an 'O' ring and hang onto it. Mine is still going strong. Only part that has ever broken on that one and 8 others was the extractor in 1982.

What could have happened... did.
