Asking for expertise and knowledge

Post by R63koch711 »

Good morning! I recently was gifted what I believe is a Remington New Model Army Revolver. My research indicates it may have been manufactured in Nov/Dec of 1863 based on the serial number. All three serial numbers match as you will see in the photos I attach. I also photographed all of the stampings I could locate on the gun as well as the cartouche on the left grip, which is difficult to make out and you will also see in the photos. Some of the stampings are a c or C, not sure, but it is my understanding the capital C means condemned. My confusion comes because it also has a cartouche, which should mean it was accepted for military use. Please provide me with any and all expertise and knowledge you can regarding the pistol. Thank you!!! Ross

Hi Ross,
looks a bit battered, pitted. I cannot give expert advise, but made some observations. There are C, M maybe H and J stamps. Those are sub inspector's. I don't think C is "condemned". The front sight is just about to fall off, been screwed up nearly the two laps available, it should be rather low, set for 75 yards. For the cartouche you might try to use different angles of infalling light and/or dusting with chalk, forensic style. How is the action? How is the rifling? Have you shot it?
