remington 700 vls

Post by red dawg »

I purchased a 22-250 in a rem 700 vls with a black and grey laminate stock. Just wondering if anyone could help me retrieve some more information on this rifle.

Like, what information?

You've already described everything about it in your first sentence.

Barrel date codes can be deciphered with the information in this link.

I know that it was born in 2003 but that is all I can find out about it. I have read that this was a limited run then but remington wont tell me anything other than when it was born. I guess more than anything I would like to know the value maybe since I cant seem to find anything and if it was in fact a limited run. Seems like I am in the right place to find this info. Thanks, matt

Hi Matt.

I hardly think it was a "limited run" since they were still in the 2009 catalog.
As far as "value" goes, it's worth whatever you bought it for or could sell it for. Since there were probably lots of them made, I wouldn't count on it increasing in value for some time......or unless you bought it at a REALLY low price.
Values aren't given out on the forum because of too many unknowns, especially not being able to physically handle and inspect the firearm.

Are you sure we are talking about the same rifle. Just like a standard vls but with a stainless barrel and black and grey beavertail forend stock with no thumbhole. Not saying you are wrong at all just trying to verify info a bit. Do you have a link or anything for the 2009 catalog or better yet the 2003 catalog. I know I read an article online a couple years ago(that I cant find now) were it said they made 200 22-250 and 200 223. That is all I really know. I only know that from the research that I did before the purchase of the firearm. I guess I am so intreged because it has been a safe queen(never been fired) and if it not a limited run firearm I will start hunting with it. Thanks, I appriciate the help.

You weren't specific in your first post about any other variations from a standard VLS. Nor, did you post a picture.

However, my opinion of Remington's "limited runs" is......well......rather limited. Over the years, they've made SOOOOO many variations of so many models (and some pretty poor design and marketing screw-ups), that almost every one of them could be called "limited runs". Since I started acquiring their catalogs in 1968, it was normal to see the "NEW for 19XX" (or now 200X). Most of the time, the new stuff only lasted a year or at most, a few. I guess that's what makes "collecting" Remington variants such a challenge (or interesting). However, it seems that after they quit making some of them, the company divulges themselves of the problems with them and won't work on them anymore.
I have a Remington 3200 Trap shotgun that falls into that category. I acquired it in about 1990 and didn't realize until recently that there was an "upgrade" (fix) that originally had been done for free at the factory. Now, the factory won't touch them and an outfit in Minnesota has the sole market on that......and it costs about what I paid for the gun when I got it......$800. I hardly ever use it and it works just fine, but for those folks who try to sell them, without the "upgrade", they're not worth very much.

Anyway, it's just one small example regarding Remington's "limited" productions.

Years ago, I adopted Jim Carmichael's philosophy about collecting and shooting firearms......
"I'm going to let my next-of-kin worry about their value".

Like Jim, I'm going to shoot everything I've got (assuming it's in shooting condition) because that's what it was meant for.

Here's a link to Remington's catalogs available for downloading.
