870 Wingmaster
870 Wingmaster
What was the last year the unique cylindrical forearm was used on the 870? I have heard it referred to as "corncob" and "tootsie roll". Thanks.

You can look at the information in this link and see if it helps.

Problem with answering your question without a qualifier is that they used that "corncob" type of stock on their "Police" (law enforcement) models for a long time.

Re: 870 Wingmaster
Thanks. I can only tell you that all three guns 12 ga, 16 ga, and 20 ga all appear to be the AP Standard grade. In reviewing the link you referred me to the advertisement for Spring 1959 shows the 870 AP Standard without the "corncob" forearm. Can I assume that was the last year they used it on the AP Standard or is it not that easy? Thank you again.
Re: 870 Wingmaster
*I* wouldn't "assume" that.
The image (text) from 1961 mentions the AP model in describing the "Rifled Slug Special".
I don't have any (physical) catalogs prior to 1968, but in the 1968 catalog they mention new stock designs for the Model 760 pump rifle. They used the "corncob" style stocks and (I believe) the "fleur-de-lis" style checkering on the 760 prior to that.......over the years, I've seen several in those stock styles, but have no way of knowing what vintage they were.
For the 870, I would guess the "corncob" style was phased out in the "field" models sometime between '62 and '67.

Re: 870 Wingmaster
I know the 'standard' Wingmasters got the fleur de lis impressed checkering and DuPont RKW (?) bowling pin finish like the then new 1100s in either 1963 or 1964, and I am almost sure it was '63. I believe they dropped the ADL/BDL nomenclature then as well. The corn cob fore end still came on the police/security models for many years.
What could have happened... did.
Re: 870 Wingmaster
The standard grade 870 in the 1950-1955 used the M31 type left-over corn cobb and plain walnut stock. Each are marked to gauge ,my 1953 16ga. 870 is stamped on top under under the barrel where the barrel clearance trench is cut. I believe the early ones used left over Rem. M-31 forends. The police roit is a different shape not the same as the early corncobb type of the M-31. The 1956 standard forend and latter forend of police roit are not M31 leftover true round corncobb,s of the 1950-1955 standard models. The first run of 870,s allso used M31 barrels that were banded with a ring and locking lug attached for the 870. hope this helps.
