Got a 20 gauge Sportsman 58. Gun ejects low or high velocity shells per the adjuster on the front of the mag tube.
Gun fires and loads next shell from mag tube fine...but hammer goes forward (follows).
It does not fire the newly loaded shell (not going FA).
I replaced the sear and hammer, and saw that the sear spring would often kink in max compression- holding the sear back so it wouldn't be forward to engage the hammer.
I changed springs, made different ones even (lengths and strength), and nothing has helped.
The sear doesn't stick in testing (trigger group removed) like before, yet in firing the hammer still follows.
It ejects the empties fine, and if it ejects it should be far enough in stroke to push the hammer to allow sear engagement.
Where next to look for a problem?
Sportsman 58 hammer follow
Re: Sportsman 58 hammer follow
Let me preface by saying I am not a 58 expert. Unless the bottom of the action bar is so worm that it does not depress the hammer far enough to engage the sear, which I don't think it is because it sounds like it is cocking correctly when you load it manually, I would first suspect that the action bar is not being driven quite far enough to the rear to make the hammer engage the sear.
I had a similar issue with my Wingmaster many years ago hunting from a cramped floating blind. I would short shuck it, and the gun would eject the empty, cock the hammer, and not release the next shell from the magazine. Working the action slowly, there was only about 1/16" between A-OK and malfunction, and I would screw up repeatedly.
Or, it could be your disconnector is worn.
Good luck.

Re: Sportsman 58 hammer follow
It ejects the empty and loads a fresh one from the mag just fine.
The gas piston and mag tube are clean and dry, the orange lettering warning of lubrication is easily readable too
The recoil spring looked fine in removal.
I'll place some tape over the bolt handle slot, see at what point max rear travel is in firing, compare that to manual cycle and known hammer catch.
I was thinking along your lines, that the action bar might be worn, in firing it might be more dynamic in movement and ride a bit high.
The gun has been shot a lot, but not abused. So I'm thinking it has to be a high wear item.
I set the gas adjuster to light and shot some heavy loads, to maximize bolt travel and from the recoil it would appear that the system bottomed out. It cycles light fine, with the gas setting to "light" and heavy feels more comfortable with it set to "heavy".
So it appears that the piston is working, as is venting.
I'll check the action bar next, I can't remember if there's a tab at the back or not.

Re: Sportsman 58 hammer follow
Did you see the note about the disconnector? That's the only other thing I can think of that would cause your problem.
What could have happened... did.
Re: Sportsman 58 hammer follow
Yeah, I don't have the gun (belongs to a friend) so will check that too.
Another possible item?
The magazine is for 2 rounds (3 shot total IIRC). The recoil spring butts up against the mag tube spring end cap.
I'm not sure how that's put in there, think it's just friction fit. If somebody shoved shells in the mag, tried for too many, could it have pushed the end cap too far fwd, reducing the stroke?
Just thinking out loud. Dunno what happened, original owners had an issue way back, might have done some wacky stuff (insert shells with recoil spring/piston system removed?)
I'll check the action bar, disconnector and mag tube stop next week. I'm moving this week (bummer) so my gun and bow playing days are gone for a few.
