Clymer 16 gauge 2 3/4" reamer (finish).

Post by Walz »

What I have:
Clymer 16 gauge 2 3/4" reamer (finish).

What I've done:
I purchased this on eBay for my; 16 gauge, 2 1/2" shotgun shell, on my 1900 SXS hammerless shotgun to lengthen the shell to modern 2 3/4" shotgun shell.

What I need to find out is if the finish reamer incorporate the force cone also?

The one pictured does not include the forcing cone reamer. A forcing cone reamer would have no step at the end of the chamber reamer. I have seen some older ones that did have a very slight step supposed to equal the thickness of the hull only.

Why not use the correct length shells and leave the chamber alone. I know of a Remington Model 1894 10ga. Damascus 2 7/8 the chambers were ream for 3 1/2 inch shells the gun was sent to London proof house the barrels held the receiver cracked.

Perhaps he doesn't want to reload special 16 gauge shells. There is a pretty major difference in my mind between lengthening a 16 gauge to "standard" and lengthening a 10 gauge to 3-1/2" Magnum length, but I do not know the pressures for 10 gauge offhand. It is possible if the maximum pressures for 10s are like 12s and they are the same for standard and magnum shells that the receiver would have cracked with any modern proof load.

More on the 10ga. open up to 3 1/2 inch and the receiver cracked the barrels held are Damascus. I have a copy of the proof load the London proof house uses.
